The Humber-North Hawks finished one spot out of a wild card spot for the 2011 Challenge Cup. With a resounding victory at the Humber Invitational on November 25th, they won't be missing out in 2012.Humber dominated the 16 team event, going 5-0 and posting impressive wins every step of the way - including a stunning 9-0 win over defending two-time Challenge Cup finalists Seneca-Newnham in the final - the largest margin of victory ever in a Challenge Series event final.
The Hawks won their pool and a spot in the semi-finals with big wins over Durham, Boreal and Seneca Tri Campus. There, they met the George Brown Huskies, who emerged as pool winners thanks to a tough 4-2 win over Orillia Fall Face-off champions Georgian-Barrie. Humber took a 2-0 lead into the third before the Huskies responded, but a late goal by the Hawks sealed the win and a spot in the championship.
Seneca-Newnham emerged as pool champions after defeating Sheridan tourney champs Fanshawe 5-3, then earned a ticket to the finals with a hard fought 4-3 semi-final shootout win against Georgian-Orillia. The Hawks proved to be too much for the Sting in the final, though, preventing Seneca from earning an automatic bid to the Challenge Cup.
Humber-North joins Fleming-Lindsay, Fanshawe and Georgian-Barrie as Challenge Series tourney winners this year and have qualified along with those teams for the Ontario Challenge Cup, March 22-23rd at Durham College in Oshawa.
