The 2013-14 Men's Extramural Hockey season is well underway, with three tournaments to date - and three different champions - once again demonstrating that on any given tournament day, anyone can win.
First up was the Steve Blundy Memorial Tournament hosted by Sheridan College on November 12th. Eight teams vyed for the title, with St. Lawrence Cornwall taking on Durham in one semi-final and Conestoga clashing with UOIT in another. Durham suprised Cornwall 3-2 to advance to the final, with Conestoga defeating UOIT to advance. A tough final saw Conestoga emerge with a 4-3 win and the tournament title.
Next up was the Georgian Fall Faceoff, with 10 teams battling for the championship. Semi-final action saw perennial juggernaut Fanshawe defeat Georgian-Barrie 3-1, while surprising Lakehead-Orillia stormed back from a 4 goal deficit to defeat Canadore 5-4. In the end, the Falcons proved too strong for the Timberwolves, taking the championship game by a 4-2 score.
Last up was the 16-team Humber Invitational, consisting of four groups of four teams in which only the group winners advance to the playoffs. One semi-final saw the host Humber North team defeat George Brown 3-1, while the other featured Fleming defeating a combined Durham/UOIT team 5-4 in a shootout. The final again was a hard-fought affair, but in the end the host Humber North team prevailed 3-2 to win the title.
Next up is the St. Lawrence-Brockville Invitational January 9th and 10th. The inaugural Men's Power Ratings will be published on Wednesday January 8th.
