For the past three season, the Fleming Lindsay Auks have had to qualify for the Challenge Cup at the end of the season as a wild card team. Not so this year.
The Auks overcame a tourney opening loss at the Canadore Invitational - and their all to familiar spot among tournament penalty leaders - to reel off four straight wins and emerge as tournament champions - becoming the first team to book a spot in the 2012 Challenge Cup in March.
Fleming started the tournament with a tough 1-0 loss to Georgian-Orillia, but rebounded to defeat Boreal and book a spot in the quarter-finals. There, they met the defending Challenge Cup champion St. Lawerence-Cornwall Sharks and emerged with a solid 1-0 win. From there, it was on to the semi-finals against Georgian-Barrie. Fleming scored two early goals in the first and added another two early in the third to seal a 4-1 win.
The finals featured a rematch with Georgian-Orillia, who despite a loss to Georgian-Barrie, defeated U of T Scarborough in the quarter finals and the host Canadore Panthers in the semis to return to the final for the second year in a row. Orillia scored first, but two quick goals by Fleming gave them a lead they would not relinquish. The Auks overcame penalty trouble in the third and scored another to claim the title 3-1.
