The Extramural Hockey Power Ratings (EHPR) slot teams according to their record, tournament results and strength of schedule. They compare the relative strength of teams across the province and are calculated after each tournament.
Rating Points are an average of a team's results from all the tournaments they compete in. A perfect score is 100 - which would mean a team has won every tournament it entered and has only played opponent's rated in the Top 4 for men, Top 2 for women.
40% of Rating Points are based on a team's tournament performance average, with teams earning points on the basis of where they place in a tournament and how many teams are participating in a tournament. 30% of Rating Points is based on the average strength of a team's opponents at the time they play them. The remaining 30% of Rating Points are based on a team's winning percentage a per game points average.
While entering more tournaments does give teams a chance to improve their rating, it will only happen if they perform well at each event they enter, since the ratings are an average of tourney results, not an accumulation of them. This means every game counts - even consolation rounds.
The Power Ratings are a useful tool for OCCCR tournament directors to create pools of similar strength during round robin play at their tourneys. The year-end Power Ratings are also used to determine entries into the Challenge Cup.
Invitations are extended based on the position of non qualifying teams in the Power Ratings. Teams must play in at least two OCCCR 5-on-5 hockey tournaments to be eligible for an invitation. Only OCCCR-affiliated schools will be eligible for Challenge Cup qualification.
Potential teams who may qualify via this route will be contacted in February to confirm interest if they qualify.
Participants in the Challenge Cup will be seeded on the basis of the final EHPR.
