FALCONS SOAR TO WOMEN'S TITLE

FANSHAWE FALCONS
2013 Women's Extramural Hockey Challenge Cup Champions
It came down to one period left to play and needing to overcome one goal. That was the one thing that stood in the way of Fanshawe winning the first ever women's Challenge Cup in Cornwall last Friday.

And in one minute, the Falcons showed why they are No. 1.

The top rated Fanshawe Falcons trailed the host and #2 rated St.
Lawrence Cornwall Sharks 1-0 in the third period of the Challenge Cup final in front of a big hometown crowd of Sharks supporters.  In this, the sixth meeting of the season between these squad, the Sharks led, just like they had a week earlier when they defeated the Falcons to win the Seneca Invitational.   But in one minute, everything changed.

Midway through the third, the Falcons scored on a goalmouth scramble to tie the game and 57 seconds later scored again to take the lead 2-1.   The reeling Sharks never recovered and Fanshawe held on to win the title and bring home the crown.

Six teams competed in the inaugural Women's Challenge Cup in what was a very close competition.   Quarterfinal action saw WLU Brant squeak out a 2-1 win over Georgian, while Humber defeated Sault College.  The semis saw SLC defeat WLU while Fanshawe dispatched Humber.   Humber went on to defeat WLU 1-0 in the bronze medal game.
