The 2013-14 Women's Extramural Hockey season has seen two tournaments to date, and the defending champion Fanshawe Falcons have picked up right where they left off last season - by winning tournaments.
The first tournament of the season was the Georgian Fall Faceoff, hosted by Georgian-Orillia and site of the 2014 Women's Hockey Challenge Cup. After being a late addition to the tournament, Fanshawe made the trip to Orillia a worthwhile one. In the preliminary round, Fanshawe defeated Georgian #2 and Lakehead to advance to the semi-finals, where they dispatched Georgian #1 by a 6-2 count. That set up a hard-fought final against a tough Conestoga squad. With the game knotted at 1 apiece and overtime looming, the Falcons scored a late one for the 2-1 victory.
Next up was the annual Humber Invitational, the largest tournament on the schedule, featuring 12 women's teams. Fanshawe went 3-0 in round robin play to earn a semi-final berth against Sault College, whom the Falcons defeated 4-2. This set up a rematch of last year's Challenge Cup final against St. Lawrence Cornwall. As usual, it was a close game but in the end the Falcons won 3-2 to take the tournament title and move to 9-0 on the season.
The Falcons will sit atop the inaugural 2013-14 Women's Power Ratings, which will be published on Wednesday, January 8th.
