The Women's Hockey Challenge Series hosted two tournaments in January - and like the men's series, each tourney boasted a different champion.
Fleming - Lindsay hosted a five-team Challenge Series event on January 23rd - with close games being the order of the day. Host Fleming upset powerhouse St. Lawrence Cornwall to open the tournament, and Durham/UOIT posted impresssive wins over Georgian and Lakehead in round robin play. With all teams making the playoffs, the possibility of a team coming in the back door to win it all existed - and Georgian busted through that door once the playoff round started. Playing 5 games in 6.5 hours, Georgian overcame round robin losses to SL Cornwall and Durham/UOIT to defeat Lakehead in the quarter-finals and Durham/UOIT in the semis to set up a rematch with Cornwall, who had defeated the Grizzlies 2-0 earlier in the day. The game was a see-saw affair and went to overtime, where a short-handed breakaway goal by Georgian gave them the victory and the tourney title.
Last week saw U of T Scarborough host a six team event in which Humber North and U of T Scarborough won their pools to face second place pool finishers Sault College and WLU Brant in crossover semi-final action. Upsets abounded as the Sault defeated Humber and WLU defeated UTSC to set up a finals showdown. A great game ended tied 2-2 after regulation, with WLU scoring in OT to take the title.
