For three games, the McMaster Marauders couldn't win at the inaugural SLC Cornwall Invitational held Dec 5th and 6th. But in the end, they didn't lose - and that was the difference as the Mac claimed the title with a lopsided 7-2 win over Georgian-Barrie in the final.
Eight teams came from as far away as Hamilton and Orillia to compete in the two-day tourney, with the host SLC Cornwall Sharks holding down top spot entering the tourney. The Sharks lived up to top billing in round robin play with impressive wins over La Cite, Georgian-Orillia and defending Challenge Cup champions Sheridan to win their group book a spot in the semi-finals. The other group saw Georgian Barrie take top spot with wins over SLC Kingston, SLC Brockville and a tie against McMaster, with MAC limping into the quarter-finals with three ties in three games.
However, the Marauders picked a good time to start winning. First they defeated Sheridan 2-1 to advance to a semi-final showdown against top rated SLC. In the game of the tourney, MAC capitalized on their opportunities to hold on for a 3-2 win. On the other side, and undermanned Georgian-Orillia squad carried the play against their arch-rivals Georgian-Barrie in the semis, only to fall 2-1.
In the final, MAC jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Barrie closed to 2-1. But a late goal to end the second and an early powerplay goal in the third gave MAC a 4-1 lead and effectively sewed up the title.
