CHALLENGE CUP TOURNAMENTS SUSPENDED FOR 2017

It appears the 2016 Challenge Cups may be the last played in Men's and Women's hockey.

This past December, a motion was put forth at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association's Athletic Director's winter meeting by the OCAA Executive Committee to suspend Challenge Cups for the 2016-17 season pending a sport review.

That motion was approved.

The decision is a surprise to many in the Ontario collegiate campus recreation community.

Extramural sports are managed through the Ontario Colleges Committee on Campus Recreation (OCCCR).  OCAA member schools elect an OCCCR Executive Committee at the OCCCR's annual general meeting each spring to oversee campus recreation tournaments and events throughout the year.   Challenge Cups were a topic of discussion at this past April's OCCCR AGM.  The overwhelming majority of members endorsed continuation of extramural Campus Challenge Series Sports (men's and women's hockey, indoor cricket, men's basketball) at that meeting.

Details of the sport review, which will encompass both extramural and varsity sports, are still being developed.
Regardless, the decision does not affect any Challenge Cups for 2016,  so the Women's Hockey Challenge Cup will still be held by host WLU Brantford on March 10th and11th, with the Men's Challenge Cup slated to be held by Georgian-Barrie on March 21st and 22nd.
