The Extramural Men's Challenge Series continued last week with the Seneca Invitational in Toronto and Fanshawe Invitational in London. When the dust settled, the host Seneca Sting and the Humber-Lakeshore Hawks joined the ranks of 2015-16 tournament champions.
In Toronto, the host Seneca Sting saw three of their four games go to a shootout - and came out on the winning end twice when it mattered. After opening he tournament with a 4-1 win over Georgian Barrie, the Sting fell 3-2 to Sheridan in a shootout, but managed to win their pool after Georgian defeated Sheridan. In the semi-finals, the Sting fell behind 2-0 against defending Challenge Cup champions Trent, but scored two powerplay goals in the third to tie it and won in a shootout to go to the final. There, they took on Fleming and again were in a see-saw battle that needed a shootout, where they once again prevailed to win 2-1 and take the title.
In London, 11 teams competed for the Fanshawe Invitational crown. Humber-Lakeshore booked their ticket to the semi-finals with a 2-0 opening win against Durham followed by an impressive 7-2 win over St. Clair. The Hawks were in tough in the semi-final against Mohawk as regulation solved nothing with the teams knotted at 1-1. But, the shootout proved kind for Humber as they eked out a 2-1 victory. In the finals, Lakeshore met Orillia Fall Faceoff champs Centennial in what turned into a defensive struggle. The Hawks scored first and it was all they would need as they hung on for a 1-0 win and the tournament title.
The Men's and Women's Challenge Series continues on Friday January 29th at the U of T Scarborough Invitational as 12 men's teams and 6 women's teams clash for supremacy.
